An Evening With WWII Veteran Bill Wagner
Fall 2007
In early February 1945 an American B-17 crashed near Langemark, Belgium while returning from a bombing mission over Germany. The crash landing was well executed, and the crew all survived; with the assistance of the citizens of Langemark the crew recovered and eventually returned to their base in England. In October of 2001 a commemorative monument was erected on the site of the crash. The BAHSC plans to organize an event with Bill Wagner of Highland Park, IL, one of the survivors of the B-17. Mr. Wagner has a lot of very fascinating stories to tell about this and other events in WWII. More details will follow.
The Belgians of St. Joseph County, Indiana
November 2006
On November 11, 2006 BAHSC President Jim Vertenten made a presentation at the Main Branch of the St. Joseph County (IN) Public Library entitled 'The Belgians of St. Joseph County.' The Library's Local History and Genealogy Department attempts to attract interest to the Library through programs featuring the ethnic roots of the local populace. Their staff came across our BAHSC website, and asked if we had a speaker for this subject area. We were very eager to take this opportunity to bring the Chicago and Indiana Belgian-American communities together. The presentation was given to about 45 guests, and was very well received. The BAHSC hopes to do similar presentations in the future. An abbreviated version of the presentation is provided here. If you desire further information, pleasefeel free to contact us.
